Disconnectica unveils a sonic odyssey with his new single Deviate. Thunderous drums and commanding organ stabs deliver the industrial flavours of this track. We feel we are being taken for a ride on an unstoppable conveyor belt, pulsing forward, through the pounding machines of an automated factory. The journey is replete with ear candy and surprising musical elements throughout, such as the brief and unexpected appearance of a sitar, adding a taste of the mystical. We are given glimpses into other worlds as we go, but are ultimately driven inexorably foward to the climactic finale.
Lyrically, "Deviate" explores the human tendency to turn a blind eye to personal crises, drawing parallels between literal train wrecks and the emotional turmoil within ourselves. Through vivid imagery, Disconnectica confronts our reluctance to engage with the struggles of others, or indeed the struggles within ourselves, leaving listeners to question their complacency and confront uncomfortable truths lurking beneath the surface.
Robert Webb, the creative force behind Disconnectica, recalls the genesis of the track. “The initial musical spark was inspired by a Pink Floyd trick: playing a chord on an organ for a time, and then stopping for the same time. Half time on, half time off and repeat. It has a mechanical, driving effect. I think I had already come up with the initial lyrics separately and put the music and lyrics together later.”
Deviate has been played on two 3RRR shows (1, 2), and played on 4ZZZ. The Deviate music video won Best Music Video at Canberra's the WTF Film Festival 2024 and Italy's Giove International Film Festival 2024, won Best Experimental Music Video at the Parai International Musical Awards 2024, was a winner in the International Film Talent Awards and the Spring Film Festival of Kerala, a finalist in the International Film Talent Awards, a finalist in the CUT International Short Film Festival in New Jersey, received an honourable mention from the Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival, was nominated for Best Music Video, Best Original Idea and Best Editing at the Top Indie Film Awards 2024, and part of the official selection for the Golden Bridge Istanbul Short Film Festival 2024.
“...exists in an alternative universe, one where it is 2024 and 1980 at the very same time.
... I feel a wonderful connection to David Bowie's artistic flirtations with Robert Fripp- circa "Scary Monsters" (Super Creeps) and Kraftwerk
... Love it. Besides the overall atmosphere, there are so many delicious individual sounds that bounce off each other

“Disconnectica's “Deviate” is an exciting art-rock experiment”

Review by Alt77
“The album's opening track is also its lead single “Deviate”, that features
influences that range from The Beatles into Radiohead in a track that sounds and feels
like an avant-garde experience. “Deviate” shows Robert's creativity rummaging through
synthetic sounds that swirl around themselves in what could only be described as an
eclectic dystopia, really.
Its surreal music video illustrates this landscape very well, as it carefully blends the
lines between illusion and the real world. It serves as a bold testament of what Robert
is here to do: music that is challenging, euphoric and utterly unique.”

Review by LT1KF
“...reminded me a lot of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd due to the
amount of experimentation and liberties that was taken with the organs and keyboards.
What I truly loved though was how this experimentation sounds so modern and fresh,
especially in the parts where there's a strange vocal effect or a sitar line that makes
for an epic movie soundtrack feeling.”

Review by Rock Era Magazine
“With thundering drums and forceful organ chords, this piece of art rock
moves forward with unstoppable energy, peppered with aural surprises that keep you
intrigued for what may follow.”

Deviate is the opening anthem from Disconnectica's debut album Eclectic Dystopia which was released on the same day.
It's a train wreck
It's a car crash
Don't stop to look
Go around
Stormy weather overhead
Pull my tether over the edge
Best you clear a path
Deviate
Building on fire
Comes crashing down
Nothing to see here
Move along
Avert your eyes
Avert your eyes
Avert your eyes
Avert your eyes
Avert your eyes
Avert your eyes
Disconnectica is the solo project of singer/songwriter Robert Webb from Melbourne, Australia, delivering genre-hopping under a broad alternative rock umbrella. Quirky songwriting reminiscent of Bowie and Beatles, with elements of rock à la White Stripes and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the downright weirdness of Radiohead and Zappa. At times playful, at times sinister, often both. But always unique.
Disconnectica's debug album Eclectic Dystopia has finally been released after years of work and tweaking. Eight singles from the album received airplay on Australian FM radio, including 3RRR (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8), RTRFM, 4ZZZ (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), Three D Radio, Tribe FM, Gippsland FM, Pulse FM (1, 2), 2MCE-FM, Valley FM, 107.3 HFM and played over 200 times on Antipodes Radio (1, 2, 3), and played on Big Satsuma Radio in the UK (1, 2. 3).
His music videos have won Best Music Video at the Aasha International Film Festival 2023, won Best Music Video, Best Original Idea, and Best FX (twice) and been nominated for Best Director, Best Music Video (twice), Best Original Idea (twice), Best Editing (twice), and Best FX at the Top Indie Film Awards 2023/2024, won Best Visual Effects, Best VFX in a Music Video, Best Avant Garde Music Film and Best New Wave Music Film at the Festival de Indie 2024, won Best Music Video at Canberra's WTF Film Festival 2024 and Italy's Giove International Film Festival 2024, won Best Music Video at the Cuckoo International Film Awards 2024, won Best Art Music Video and Best Experimental Music Video at the Parai International Musical Awards 2024, a winner in the Spring Film Festival of Kerala 2024, been finalists in the Rome Music Video Awards 2024, Prague International Music Video Awards 2023, and the CUT International Short Film Festival 2024, received an honorable mention from the Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival 2023, received a Special Mention from the United Kingdom Music Video Festival 2023, and been part of the official selection for the Europe Music Video Awards 2023, and the Tokyo International Short Film Festival 2024.
“That was wild... Beatlesque” - Tim Shiel (host on Double J & Triple J)
“The psychotic madness of Disconnectica” - Kate Kingsmill, 3RRR
“I really enjoyed listening to this song. It is so different but familiar at the same time. I am intrigued and want to hear more” - Indie Music Insider Blog's review of Somewhere Always
“...tonight we'll be shining the spotlight on his latest single White Noise... With old-school wailing electric guitars and an amazing solo in the middle this is one to make you move and think at the same time.” - Dirty Harry, S.O.S., 2MCE FM
Disconnectica is a DIY artist using only virtual instruments on a computer, but gravitates towards realistic sounds, and has fooled musicians with his electric guitars and drums. However, only the vocals are are recorded from outside the computer.
“I've always been a bit of an outsider, a bit of a hermit, and felt the need to go my own way, divert from the pack. It's the same with music and everything else I do. I don't expect it to have mass appeal, but I hope it finds a cult niche corner in the alternative market somewhere”
Being interested in the whole package, he also designs his own cover art and makes trippy music videos. A programmer by trade, he writes software to create mind-bending geometric effects for these videos. He writes “It's great to have a single purpose that brings all my big interests together: music, film, geometry and programming.”
Robert played piano in his youth. His family had two synthesizers and a hardware sequencer, and he remembers spending many hours composing and recording long instrumental pieces on their primitive interfaces. Who needs a computer when you have two lines of dot-matrix text?! He moved onto other things for many years, writing the occasional piano solo. But eventually answered the call and returned to music production.
